Memorial Weekend 1

On Saturday, Vitaly ran his first 5K ever, under 36 minutes, at a veterans memorial race. And to make it even better, he won his age group!
Here he is holding his number and dog tag medal.

The event also had a wonderful memorial day celebration. It is a beautiful veteran's campus and has a huge national cemetary, amazing history ( see church) and it is a great place to remember and honor those that have served. Here are some pictures

Civil War cannon, notice some of the national cemetary gravestones.

Fish Food

I traveled to the pet store to pick up some food for this:
Special little pellets made just for a Betta fish.

I said that doesn’t “look” like the same brand of pellets, we had before.

The pet store girl said the Betta’s eat it here.

I said, what if he doesn’t “like them”? She looked at me like I was crazy.

I took home my $4.00 little jar of pellets for Spike.

Guess what?

He didn’t eat them.
He spit them out.
He is a picky fish.
He prefers the other brand. Is that possible if you are a fish?

2 army men a girl and a birthday

So our friend had a REALLY cool birthday for her son and the boys especially LOVED it!

Here are some cool army dudes...
and a REALLY COOL army cake

And the sweetest girl in the world that turned even the shyest little girl into her friend.
My friend's daughter is ultra shy and would not talk a word. Oksana said she is shy and I said " well you are not so go talk to her!" And off she went, and before you know it she had all of the girls playing
Here she is leading the girl army!

And
why I have been slacking.. well everyone knows I hate turning another year older.
Of course, it happened again...
A few birthday memories compliments of my son, Nikolai, that stole my camera as we ate at SAKI!

Waiting for a table at Cheesecake factory and told a THREE hour wait...WHAT?? Goodbye!

Self portrait driving to Saki

Grandpa enjoying the soup!
O Using her chopsticks and loving it!

Too many fried eggs!

And a bedtime story to end the day with our Aunt R:)
Sweet dreams~

Mother's Day

Around 6:30AM on Sunday, I heard the patter of little feet going down the stairs. Since Oksana and Nikolai are a little scared to head down alone, I figured it was Vitaly.

I got up and saw Nikolai coming back up the stairs. In his hands, he held two papers, as he smiled proudly at me!

“Happy Mother’s Day, Mommy!” He happily exclaimed, as he opened the papers and began to read a story he had written for me. As a tear came to my eye, I felt blessed that I have been chosen, to be his mom.

And so it begins..

And so it begins…

Yesterday, Vitaly took a major step in growing up. He went on his first school overnight.
The third graders from his school headed to Columbus, to spend the day and night, at COSI http://www.cosi.org/. He badly wanted me to go as a chaperone, but I wanted him to take that big step on his own.

When I was Vitaly’s age, I fondly remember spending the night, at COSI, too. (Although, when I was a child it was a different museum, for those oldies like me).

I have great memories of meeting many other children, eating our special meals, sleeping on the floor, and bringing home a:

1. Peanut plant (that actually grew a peanut later)
2. Hermit Crab (Bet my mom was ecstatic about that! I truly doubt they give these away anymore)

Vitaly’s group had such a big day and night planned. There was a dance party scheduled for 11:00 PM! Those poor chaperones that went with them! I can’t even imagine hundreds of third graders on the move that late at night. When he was in the car I told him they were having a dance and he might be dancing with a girl! The look on his face was priceless.

I hope he had a great time, and maybe, even got to dance!

A Man and His Dog

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead...He remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them.

After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight. When he was standing before it he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother-of-pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold.

He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side. When he was close enough, he called out, 'Excuse me, where are we?''This is Heaven, sir,' the man answered... 'Wow! Would you happen to have some water?' the man asked. Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up.'The man gestured, and the gate began to open. 'Can my friend,' gesturing toward his dog, 'come in, too?' the traveler asked. 'I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets..' The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going with his dog.

After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road leading through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence. As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book. 'Excuse me!' he called to the man. 'Do you have any water?' 'Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there, come on in.' 'How about my friend here?' the traveler gestured to the dog. 'There should be a bowl by the pump.'

They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it. The traveler filled the water bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog.. When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree. 'What do you call this place?' the traveler asked. 'This is Heaven,' he answered. 'Well, that's confusing,' the traveler said. 'The man down the road said that was Heaven, too.' 'Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's hell.' 'Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?'

'No, we're just happy that they screen out the folks who would leave their best friends behind.'
